Na een arctische nucleaire test komt een vleesetende dinosaurus tot leven en zet koers naar de oostkust van Noord-Amerika. Professor Tom Nesbitt is de enige die van het bestaan van het dier afweet. Hij ontdekt dat het om een rhedosaurus gaat, maar kan niemand van deze theorie overtuigen, zelfs de vooraanstaande paleontoloog Thurgood Elson niet. Dat verandert echter wanneer Elton door het grote dier verorberd wordt. Plots blijkt het dier spoorloos, tot het terug opduikt nabij Manhattan. Nesbitt beraamt een plan om het destructieve wezen uit te schakelen.
